What’s My Level?

  • General:
You’re learning the basic rules, movement, and shot mechanics. You can sustain short rallies but still make frequent errors.

    Typical Skills:

    • Serve: You can get your serve in most of the time but lack placement or depth control.

    • Return of Serve: You can return moderately paced serves but may struggle with deep or spin serves.

    • Groundstrokes: You can sustain a few forehand rallies; backhand is less reliable.

    • Volleys: Limited volley control — often reactive, not placed.

    • Dinking: Starting to understand what a dink is, but not consistent. Many shots go too high or into the net.

    • Court Positioning: You’re learning to move with your partner and get to the non-volley zone (NVZ), but often get caught in “no man’s land.”

    • Strategy: Minimal; you’re mostly focused on getting the ball over the net.

Goal: Develop consistency in serves, returns, and dinks while improving footwork and awareness of positioning.

  • General:
You’re more consistent with medium-paced rallies and starting to understand game strategy. You know where to be on the court but still struggle under pressure or with faster shots.

    Typical Skills:

    • Serve: Reliable; occasionally aim for depth or placement.

    • Return of Serve: Consistent and deeper, helping you get to the NVZ line more effectively.

    • Groundstrokes: You can rally with moderate control and some direction. Still improving consistency under pressure.

    • Volleys: You can sustain short exchanges but may lack precision or punch volleys too hard.

    • Dinking: You can sustain dink rallies at a moderate pace; fewer pop-ups. Beginning to aim for opponent’s feet or open space.

    • 3rd Shot: Starting to use drop shots, but not consistently executed.

    • Strategy: You recognize the importance of placement and teamwork. Beginning to think about shot selection and moving as a team.

Goal: Develop reliable 3rd shot drops, directional control on dinks, and consistency at the kitchen line.

  • General:
You’re a confident and consistent player with better control, placement, and teamwork. You can execute a variety of shots intentionally and start using strategy to create openings.

    Typical Skills:

    • Serve: Consistent, deep, and occasionally with spin or placement to set up your next shot.

    • Return of Serve: Deep, controlled, and strategic — you use it to get to the NVZ effectively.

    • Groundstrokes: You can change pace and direction; fewer unforced errors.

    • Volleys: You can place volleys intentionally and reset fast balls when needed.

    • Dinking: Consistent and patient; you can control height, depth, and placement. Starting to mix up dinks to pressure opponents.

    • 3rd Shot Drop: Developing good consistency and touch — can drop from both baseline and transition zone.

    • Strategy: Strong understanding of court positioning, shot selection, and communication with your partner. You adjust your play based on opponent weaknesses.

Goal: Refine shot variety (drive vs. drop), improve transitions to NVZ, and execute resets under pressure.
